Bongo Java Roasting Co. was started by a former journalist. Thus, you can be darn assured that most of this history is true. Bob Bernstein moved from hometown Skokie, IL to Nashville in 1988 when he got a job as a reporter with Nashville Business Journal. At the time, he thought he’d spend a year or two in the country music capital of the world gaining experience and then move on to a bigger and better city that had more stuff – or at least more than one sushi place, a single Indian restaurant and (if allowed to dream big) a place to see arthouse movies. A year or so later, Bob decided he had it backwards. He liked Nashville and wasn’t so keen on his career choice. Sure, the city lacked stuff, yet it was an easy place to be (a term he coined for the city and later stole from himself to be a Bongo slogan). The main thing it lacked was a coffeehouse – Bob's favorite place to do lots of writing, some studying and a bit of coffee drinking at during high school and college. As he got bored of reporting on the silliness of the state legislature and tired of the pressure of deadlines, Bob started thinking about the good old days when he’d hang out at coffeehouses. So he started his own!

Bongo Java Roasting Co. was established in 1993 and quickly distinguished itself by becoming a 100% organic and Fair Trade coffee company. In 1997, Bongo helped start Cooperative Coffees, a group that works together to buy coffee directly from small-scale farmer cooperatives around the world.

Colombia Fondo Paez - Premium Lot

Quality control is an art unto itself within Fondo Paez. Prior to their harvest, running from early June through late August in the majority of their growing regions, Fondo Paez promoters visit each member to review production results and to encourage best picking, handling and wet processing practices. Their efforts to date have definitely paid off.

Fondo Paez coffee is characterized by pungent flavors of raisin, apricot and fresh berries, honeysuckle and vanilla aromas, bright acidity and silky full body; and their coffee continues to win recognition and awards as a 90+ coffee in both local and international cupping competitions.

We begin by sourcing the most socially-impactful, highest-quality coffee beans we can, roasting them with scientific care (in state-of-the-art 15-kilo and 10-kilo drum roasters, by PhD and MD holders), and packaging and shipping them as soon as they are roasted. We only roast on order (no coffee inventory ever!) so we can always ship your coffee just hours after roasting. 

Yet, our definition of coffee "greatness" goes well beyond high quality and unparalleled freshness - it prioritizes the impact behind each bean. In fact, our passion for coffee is only surpassed by our desire to make a difference in the lives of small coffee farmers (over wealthy large farmers or Estates which tend to dominate Specialty coffee). Our biggest success story is a small farmer Co-Op in Poaquil, Guatemala, which was able to buy their own coffee processing equipment in 2019 and continues to grow with us!
