Notes from the curator

This is a coffee we purchased on a trip to Colombia where we helped judge a micro-lot competition. This coffee placed 18th in the competition (out of 260), but was one of our all time favorites that we cupped. Sweet and tea-like with an elegant acidity.

Finca San Luis is located in Algeciras, adjacent to two national parks that are refuge to hundreds of birds and exotic plants and important hydrological reserves. Due to this natural wealth, growing coffee with environmental awareness is critical. Rodrigo Gutierrez is a native of these divine lands and for that very reason he wanted to have a coffee farm where the coffee trees were nuanced between the forests and the streams of the region.
Rodrigo cultivates Colombian varietal coffee. Colombia is based on a hybrid of Caturra and hybrid Timor, that becomes Colombia after Five generations. Showing that hyrbids like this can produce high-scoring coffee is crucial for ensuring the future sustainability of coffee as climate-change becomes a larger issue.
