Colombia Excelso Gran Galope

Cauca is in central-western Colombia, stretching from the Western Cordillera mountain range to the Pacific Ocean. Ocean winds and elevation result in Cauca being one of the coolest regions of the country. The coffee in this area is grown mostly by indigenous or Afro-descendant communities. Geographically, the region has many features including the Popayan Plateau, many rivers, and the central volcanic mountain range.

Costa Rica Aguilera Brothers Micromill-Finca Toño

The West Valley of Costa Rica is both complex in microclimates, varieties cultivated, and therefore, cup profile. Many of the winners of the Cup of Excellence have come from the West Valley. Notably, the Bourbon mutation Villa Sarchi was discovered in this region, and Kenya varieties such as SL-28 and San Roque are commonly grown. The micromills at high elevation experience cooler weather than the rest of the country, resulting in high sugar production within the cherries and high-quality offerings.

The Aguilera Brothers are a set of Cup of Excellence–winning siblings who carry on their longtime family tradition by working together to plant, pick, and process coffees from their combined 60 hectares of farmland: Their father was one of the first to plant coffee in this area in the 1940s. The 12 Aguilera brothers and sisters divide the work among themselves, with two of the brothers, Felipe and Erasmo, overseeing most of the mill operation as well as the drying areas. There are about 20 varieties sprinkled throughout the family’s primary crop of Villa Sarchi, including Gesha and various different strains of the highly productive and disease-resistant hybrid family of Catimors.

Guatemala El Panal - Jorge Mendez

Jorge started as a picker in farms in the San Pedro Necta. He saved money with his wife until he had enough to buy a small piece of land down by the Pan American highway. About 14 km away, and closer to civilization, Jorge learned the value of coffee; how to buy and sell, quality metrics, and how to grow quality coffees. He sold his property and moved back up the mountain to be back in Agua Dulce. Here he bought two small parcels and worked the land. Someone told him that having two farms apart was a waste of time so he bought the first lot where El Apiario and El Panal currently are. At first coffee wouldn't grow at this elevation and he grew corn while trying many different kinds of coffees. Finally, he discovered how to grow coffees at this altitude and continued to work on quality to what is now exceptional.

We begin by sourcing the most socially-impactful, highest-quality coffee beans we can, roasting them with scientific care (in state-of-the-art 15-kilo and 10-kilo drum roasters, by PhD and MD holders), and packaging and shipping them as soon as they are roasted. We only roast on order (no coffee inventory ever!) so we can always ship your coffee just hours after roasting. 

Yet, our definition of coffee "greatness" goes well beyond high quality and unparalleled freshness - it prioritizes the impact behind each bean. In fact, our passion for coffee is only surpassed by our desire to make a difference in the lives of small coffee farmers (over wealthy large farmers or Estates which tend to dominate Specialty coffee). Our biggest success story is a small farmer Co-Op in Poaquil, Guatemala, which was able to buy their own coffee processing equipment in 2019 and continues to grow with us!
